For many years I hosted Foto Betiko on SmugMug. At the time, I suppose I was thinking that I’d sell a lot of photo products–prints and digital licenses. And SmugMug was convenient. It owns Flickr, which is where I host most of the photos that I consider worth publishing. But things didn’t work out the way I’d hoped. In 5 years, I think I sold a grand total of perhaps a dozen prints and half that many digital licenses, and at over $250 / year, the cost of hosting on SmugMug just wasn’t worth it.
So now I’m going to recalibrate. I’ve moved Foto Betiko to my own server and replicated a site design that’s very similar to the one I had on SmugMug–which actually I quite liked. I’m going to try and keep the content here a bit more fresh and augment my galleries and projects with thoughts on photography and my personal approach to choosing subjects and scenes. (My motivations and approach have been changing in the last couple of years. More to come on that…)
In addition, at the request of friends and family, I’m going to start putting together some collections of my photos. ‘Coffee-table books’, if you will, that I’m hoping photography lovers will find enjoyable enough to put on their own shelves.
Thoughts on my galleries, projects, and musings on photography are always very welcome, and I hope everyone enjoys the new site.
